2021年1月20日、米国大統領就任式が開かれました。

すごい時代ですねー。
大統領就任演説(president inauguration speech)で
強調されるメッセージの一つに「団結」があります。
選挙では国民が共和党、民主党に分かれます。
選挙が終わり、新しい任期を始めるにあたって
国民に団結を呼びかけるのが通例です。
今回も国内の分断が問題となっている昨今なので、
unity, uniting, unionという団結を表す
言葉が頻繁に聞こえてきました。
”But the American story depends not on any one of us,
not on some of us, but on all of us.
On “We the People” who seek a more perfect Union.”
米国のストーリーは誰か一人とか、一部の人に依るのではなく、
完璧な団結を求める、我々全員によるものなのです。
”Uniting our people.”
（国民を団結させること）
”And uniting our nation.”
（国を団結させること）
”I ask every American to join me in this cause.”
（全国民に一緒にこの大義を果たしてもらいたい。）
”Uniting to fight the common foes we face”
（私たちが直面する問題に立ち向かうために団結すること）

（それには民主主義において最もとらえどころのないことが必要なのです。）

uni- には一つという意味があります。
uni-を使った言葉に、
unicycle (一輪車)
uniform (制服)
universe (宇宙)
unanimous（全会一致）があります。
どれも「一つ」がコアにありますね。
